The Dangers Of Texting While Driving

Texting while driving is a sure-fire way to cause an accident. Many statistics support this, including data reported by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co.

In a 2010 report, it was revealed that 84 percent of respondents said they texted while stopped at a red light, 42 percent said they texted on two-lane and four-lane roadways, and 27 percent said they texted when driving on wet, snowy or icy roads. It's surprising that there are not even more accidents caused by texting while driving.

Texting while driving in Ohio

Many states prohibit texting while driving. In Ohio, lawmakers recently joined dozens of other states by passing a ban on texting behind the wheel. But even where it is still legal, this type of driving behavior can constitute negligence.

Our lawyers construct cases that prove the negligence and show that the negligence resulted in the accident that caused your injuries. We know how to obtain the records of the distracted driver and compare them with the in-car computer records to prove that a distracted driver was using a cellphone at the exact moment of the accident. This allows us to argue for compensation for your expenses, lost wages, property damage and other costs of an accident injury.

Texting can be deadly

According to 2012 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 18 percent of all fatal crashes are caused by distracted driving. This shouldn't be surprising. It is estimated that a driver who texts while driving:

  • Has reduced reaction time — up to 35 percent less
  • Has reduced steering ability
  • Is 23 more times likely to be in a car accident

Most drivers injured in accidents caused by texting are in the 16 to 20 age group. Drivers in this demographic are less experienced in any event; being distracted by texting increases the risk enormously.
